“The Hammers AR15 1-4×20 Compact Short CQB Tactical Scope is perfect for use on a ‘tacticool’ 22 caliber rifle as opposed to a true AR-15.”
The Hammers AR15 1-4×20 Compact Short CQB Tactical Rifle Scope w/ One Piece Offset Mount is a variable powered rifle scope designed for use on a rifle chambered in 223 Remington such as the popular series of AR-15 rifles, but realistically performs better on 22 rim fire caliber rifles.
This scope is marketed for the tactical rifle crowd, but I found it perfect to mount on a Ruger 10/22 Take Down rifle. The one piece mount is strong and consistent enough to retain zero when removed from the rifle for storage purposes. The red dot sight makes it a perfect training alternative should you choose to mount it on an AR-15 chambered in 22 lr.
Build Quality:
The scope has a very solid feel in the hand, despite the 1” tube diameter. The matte finish gives this piece a rugged look that not only matches the finish on most tactical rifles, but serves to protect it from the rigors of field use.
Reticle – Illuminated CQB
Hammers uses an illuminated CQB (Close Quarter Battle) reticle, which has 4 brightness settings in 2 colors (red or green). The outside dot size is 20 MOA with a smaller 3 MOA center dot.
Glass Quality
The glass used in the Hammers AR15 1-4×20 Compact Short CQB Tactical Rifle Scope is consistent with the quality of lenses that can be found in the lower end of the market. They are not as clear as a Leupold or even a Nikon, but are effective and will get the job done without breaking the bank.
Magnification
The Hammers AR15 1-4×20 Compact Short CQB Tactical Rifle Scope offers variable magnification ranges from 1 X to 4 X. This is completely acceptable for the shorter range shooting accomplished with a 22lr caliber rifle.
Pros
The best part of this scope is the price. It is inexpensive enough that you will not worry too much if it is damaged or even broken. It is tough enough to survive several months in a pack along with a takedown rifle getting banged around in the trunk of a truck bed and it does hold its zero between mountings.
The manufacturer includes a cheap set of flip up lens covers in place of the “caps on a string” that normally come with scopes in this price range. This is a nice touch but at the end of the day, they are no Butler Creek.
The 9.5” overall length keeps it compact enough for use on most AR-15 upper receivers and in this case a Ruger 10/22 Takedown rifle.
Cons
The actual eye relief is closer to 2.5” than the listed 4.5” in the description. It may have been particular to this model, and for a price of less than $90, it was not something to become unglued over.
Some of the brighter settings can be hard on the eyes after looking through the glass for long periods. Again, it may be an issue with the actual scope in question.
Last Thoughts
Normal Price: $92.00![]()
Normally, I am very skeptical of a scope which does not match the manufacturer’s product descriptions to the letter. However, with the low price of this scope and my intended purposes, I was willing to let it slide. The scope held its zero despite being removed and installed at least 30 times over a 120 day period. For a sub-$100 scope for a tactical 22, it is a solid performer.
