When it comes to choosing a rifle scope, one name stands out in the crowd: Leupold. This US Optics maker makes world class scopes for hunting, target shooting and military and police applications. One of their latest models for hunting is the VX-3, a variable powered scope with 3.5 to 10 power settings.

Leupold has been building optics for over 100 years and was a pioneer for many of the improvements made to rifle scopes in the mid to late 20th century. One of the most important of these was sealing the inside of their scope tubes with Nitrogen for waterproofing. The VX-3 is sealed with a proprietary gas blend of argon and Krypton to eliminate thermal shock and reduce the diffusion of internal gases due to the larger molecules of this blend when compared to Nitrogen.

As always, special attention is paid to the lenses. Constructed of lead-free glass, the exterior is treated with an ion-assist coating known as Diamond Coat 2 to prevent scratching. This coating exceeds all US Military requirements and aids in light transmission. The edges of each lens are blackened to reduce glare and improve resolution. Combined with Leupold’s high quality lenses makes for a scope that allows the transmission of 98% of available light and the end result is a crystal clear image. This is partially helped by the 50mm objective which gathers more light to produce a clearer image and a 30mm diameter tube to transmit this light to the eye piece.

Leupold offers this scope in a variety of finishes to match the shooter’s rifle: matte black, gloss black and silver and several different reticles (duplex, Heavy Duplex and Boone & Crockett) for use with the company’s Ballistics Aiming System. A ballistics indicator ring lets shooters preset their magnification settings for whatever load they wish to use with their rifle, giving them multiple aiming points based on range and wind speed. Leupold’s custom shop offers 50 different reticles from which the shooter can choose.

The VX-3 comes packaged in Leupold’s standard two-piece Styrofoam lined box to protect the scope and includes detachable lens caps and a lens cloth to keep the lenses clean. The objective provides a remarkable 30 foot field of view at 100 yards and is ringed in Leupold’s familiar trademark of 24 karat gold.

Adjustments are made via the target style windage and elevation knobs which move ¼ MOA with each click. The clicks are solid and audible, letting the shooter know when he moves the strike of the round up, down, left or right.

This is not an inexpensive scope and it reeks of quality. It has a sturdy feel with being too heavy and lends an element of grace to any rifle. Like all of Leupold’s products it is backed by a lifetime warranty for the life of the scope.
