Red dot sights have taken the shooting world by storm, particularly in the tactical and hunting realms. The quality, durability and current level of technology has made these optics a viable option rather than just a range toy or “neat gadget”.
Without a doubt, the number one tube-based red dot sight has to be the Swedish company, Aimpoint. For over 30 years this company has been perfecting the red dot sight and nowhere is that more evident than with the Aimpoint PRO Patrol Rifle Optic. This sight was specifically designed with law enforcement professionals in mind and its construction and features reflect the input from military and law enforcement agencies that Aimpoint collected to make this sight.

The Aimpoint PRO Patrol Rifle Optic
The Aimpoint PRO Patrol Rifle Optic is built with a rugged 30mm tube that makes use of a high efficiency circuit allowing the sight to be left on and remain powered for up to 3 years off of a single battery. According to company literature the objective lens has a proprietary coating that makes it compatible with night vision devices of any generation. The objective and rear lenses are mounted within the body of the sight as an added measure of protection from trauma, impact and dirt.
Going beyond the sight’s improvements and features is Aimpoint’s QRP2 mount. This mount includes a spacer that is removable to allow the user to opt for either a low set sight on shotguns or carbines and submachine guns without existing sights or higher to co-witness with existing sights. The best part of this included mount is that it is secured via an anti-torque knob that prevents the shooter from the dangers of over tightening the mount and breaking it.
Aimpoint ships the sight in a plain white cardboard box with a foam insert in an effort to keep the price down. Other tactical sight companies have become famous for the miniaturized “pelican type” cases that they ship their optics in, but realistically, most shooters mount the sight and have no need to remove it again. If I feel the need to remove or store the Aimpoint, I can pick up a foam lined hard shell pistol case for less than $20.
The Aimpoint’s dot is small at 2 MOA but allows for pinpoint accuracy. Aimpoint offers a separate magnifier which can be attached rearward if needed to allow the shooter to reach out at ranges greater than 100 yards.
Pros
Night Vision – The compatibility with night vision is an asset that I had never considered until I mounted the Aimpoint forward of my ARES scope, it made up for ATN’s lackluster and questionable crosshair and made my night vision scope truly usable as more than a viewer.
Lenses – The clarity of the optics was superb for the Aimpoint and users should expect nothing but the best from this company. ![]()
Battery life – Having a battery run continuously for three years is definitely an asset if you have ever put a holographic sight in the safe and accidentally triggered the “On” button.
Quality – The Aimpoint represents the finest level of quality at every level of construction. In the past I considered most Aimpoint mounts as “throwaways” and would opt for a LaRue quick release type, but the QRP2 is perfect for shooters like me who are prone to over tightening bolts and screws.
Cons
For its intended purposes, I could find no fault with the Aimpoint; it is truly a unit to build a sighting system around with regard to magnifiers and night vision devices. The price may seem high to some, but the Aimpoint PRO Patrol Rifle Optic is worth every penny
