Millett 4-16×50 TRS Tactical Riflescope

“The Millett 4-16×50 Tactical Riflescope is a moderately priced versatile scope ideal for making shots out to 800 yards on all rifle calibers. There is some slop in the adjustments and challenges with regard to mounting hardware, but these can be overcome with patience.”

Millett 4-16×50 Tactical Riflescope

Millett Industries got their start in the 1970s as a manufacturer of iron sights for firearms such as the Ruger Mk2 pistol and various military surplus rifles. By the 1990s the company began manufacturing scope rings and mounts and imported scopes and red dot sights from Japan. They were later acquired by Bushnell and have maintained their own distinct product line.

The Millett 4-16×50 Tactical Riflescope represents a mid priced optic with hunters, tactical sharpshooters and target shooters in mind. The 50mm objective guarantees excellent light gathering ability and the illuminated reticle allows shots to be taken in low light conditions.

I often prefer scopes with 30mm diameter tubes for their strength and light transmitting abilities, but in this case with the 50mm objective it made it difficult to mount the scope on my rifle without resorting to high rings and a riser.

Build Quality:

The scope is constructed of aircraft grade aluminum and has a rugged and robust feel without being overly heavy. The 30mm tube ensures strength and the transmission of light from the objective to the eye piece. The turrets have a bit of slop to them when making adjustments. This was a brand new model and may have been specific to this particular scope, but consensus among fellow shooters seems that it is something Millet is known for on their imported scopes.

Reticle – Mil Dot

The Mil Dot reticle may be overkill for some purposes, but if the shooter takes the time to study how it works, it is excellent for its range finding ability and engaging moving targets.

Glass Quality

Millet relies on multicoated lenses made overseas. The glass is crisp but at higher magnification some frosting is visible around the edges of the image.

Magnification

Millet offers a variable power rating on this scope from 4 to 16 power. Ideal for short range shooting and just enough magnification for longer ranges or a clear zoom when needed.

Pros

The 30mm tube and 50mm objective guarantee excellent light gathering and transmission from the objective to the eye piece.

Millet’s illuminated reticle works well in low light conditions and may be the greatest advantage for a scope in this price range.

Cons

The 50mm objective made finding the correct sized rings a bit of a challenge, particularly when mounting on an AR10 rifle as the highest rings still allowed the bell of the objective to make contact with the rail. Several trips to the local gun shop resulted in having to custom order a set of rings and a riser to lift the 30mm tube higher than normal. This will not be too much of a problem on traditional sporting rifles, but keep it in mind if mounting on a flat top rifle with railed hand guards.

The turrets do not have a positive sounding engagement and it is easy to over dial if you rely on feel or sound to find the sweet spot.

Internet Price: $299.99
Normal Price: $539.95

For a retail price of close to $300 you can find other alternatives that will perform better as a daytime scope. The illuminated reticle may be the main advantage to this model for the price point.
