ACOG 4 X 32 Scope Dual Illuminated Chevron 223 Ballistic Reticle

“The ACOG 4X32 scope is amazing for a short range tactical optic. What it lacks in versatility it makes up for in performance.”

When looking at a Trijicon ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gun sight), the shooter has to dispel any preconceived notions about using a traditional rifle scope and embrace what is known as the Bindon Aiming Concept (BAC). This was a system developed by Trijicon’s founder, the late John Bindon. Bindon was an early advocate of shooting with both eyes open. In the case of the ACOG, the shooter is able to track and engage targets faster than traditional methods. This is due to the shooter’s vision focusing on the unmagnified view while seeing the aiming point and merging these images together. The sight picture, of course is aided by using an illuminated aiming point instead of a traditional cross hair type of reticle.

The chevron reticle in this model is zeroed at the factory with the tip of the chevron set for 100 meters. The reticle’s width at the base is 5.53 MOA which translates to 19” at 300 meters, the average width of a man’s shoulders. This gives the added benefit of being able to estimate range. This model relies on fiber optics to power the reticle during daylight and radioactive tritium for night time use.

Build Quality:

The scope is built to US military and NATO standards. It feels virtually indestructible in the hand and the included mount allows the scope to be fitted on all types of AR15 type rifles, including older styles with the carry handle.

Reticle – Chevron

The chevron reticle is one of Trijicon’s more popular reticle types. It is visible as a red glowing ^ in all lighting conditions due to fiber optics and state of the art tritium placement in the lens.

Glass Quality

Trijicon has always used what appears to be the clearest glass on an American made scope. The use of tritium and fiber optics to illuminate the reticle demand nothing less.

Magnification

The ACOG models are all fixed power scopes, calibrated for a particular round. In this case it is 4x and for a combat scope designed for ranges out to 800 yards, it seems an ideal compromise.

Pros

The use of tritium gives the ACOG its greatest advantage, use at night time. This is not for dawn or dusk type shooting, but the ability to hit a target in complete darkness without relying on expensive and heavy night vision devices. The pairing up with the fiber optics means a glowing reticle at all times without the use of batteries.

Trijicon includes a lot of extras with their ACOGs such as a Pelican hard case to protect it, a versatile Picatinny rail mount, a lens pen for cleaning and a scope coat to protect the sight.

The company has one of the best lifetime warranties in the industry.

Cons

If there is a downside to a Trijicon scope, it is the high price tag. Trijicon primarily makes the ACOG for military and law enforcement markets throughout the world, so civilian use is often a result of a contract overrun. This is a very mission specific scope. It may work in a hunting scenario, but it is really designed as a military rifle optic.

Some would see the fixed power as a downfall, but to date it is the only way that the utmost reliability can be achieved using tritium and fiber optics.

Tritium has a 10 year life and when the crosshairs go dim, it needs to be returned to the factory for new tritium to be added to the reticle.

The included mount is a bit limited and does not allow the user the benefit of using back up iron sights. For a quick release adapter, users need to look on the aftermarket at companies such as LaRue Tactical.

When building a semiautomatic AR-15 based on the M4 carbine that I carried in the military; there was only one choice for an optic: an ACOG by Trijicon. The scope itself is indestructible and it is known to work every single time I throw that rifle into my shoulder.
